Part 4: Beyond Epistemic Curiosity: Towards a Unified Model of Interest Development and Metacognitive Regulation

Audience: Open to all

Description: Most education programmes treat curiosity as an outcome. This talk argues that while it is a starting condition, it is not sufficient on its own. Drawing on interest development theory, curiosity research, and metacognition literature, this session examines the developmental pathway from epistemic curiosity to sustained competency. The talk proposes a framework that is necessary to drive the transition from situational to individual interest, how curiosity type and metacognitive regulation interact, how embodied learning plays a role in sustained interest and long-term curiosity, and what role real-audience contexts play in consolidating competency. The session closes with research questions that five years of observations as a practitioner have generated, and that are yet to be answered.
