About IBSTPI

The International Board of Standards for Training, Performance, and Instruction (IBSTPI) develops, publishes, and advocates the adoption of standards of professional practice and ethical behavior for those whose work is related to facilitating or otherwise supporting adult learning and development in career and vocational training, higher education, and organizational/workplace settings. The Board’s aim is to improve current practice and future development of professionals in the field. Our activities and membership are global in scope.

The history of IBSTPI dates back to 1977, when the Association of Educational Communications and Technology (AECT) and the National Society for Performance Improvement (NSPI, now ISPI) formed a joint task force to establish standards for training, performance, and instruction. Subsequently, representatives from the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD, now ATD) joined the effort. IBSTPI is now registered as an independent, not-for-profit organization and operates within a set of established by-laws.

IBSTPI has developed, validated, and published competency standards for instructors, instructional designers, training managers, evaluators, and online learners,  in addition to authoring books to accompany each of these five standards sets. The Board has also established codes of ethics for instructional designers and for training managers. Universities use IBSTPI standards and competencies as a basis for their curricula, and companies and government departments use IBSTPI standards as the basis for internal learning, development, and performance enhancement purposes.

IBSTPI is expanding the scope of its activities to encompass more competency domains and occupational roles within the learning and development field, as well as to produce resources, tools, and exemplars to assist professionals and their organizations in implementing the IBSTPI standards in a range of learning contexts
